How does Hypnosis work?

Probably the most accurate way of defining hypnosis is to simply call it "guided meditation." Since many of us enter a meditative or "trance" state while listening to music, watching TV, listening to a good speaker or a good sermon at church, in an elevator, reading a good book, or even sometimes while driving when you can't consciously remember how you got somewhere and you were operating in autopilot mode!

Does hypnosis control my mind?
Put it this way: do we give up control of our minds during a movie? When is the last time you got so involved during a movie or TV show that you actually felt emotion? You were literally in a hypnotic trance, although you still have the power to emerge from that state if desired. Your mind may be guided by a movie, TV show, self-hypnosis tape, or Hypnotherapist, but YOU still have the power to resist. You are more than welcome to listen to the recording at any place to check the content so you can be totally comfortable and feel safe that the suggestions we make are in your interest, before listening to the entire recording and going into trance.

What is being hypnotised like?
Since hypnosis is a natural state of mind, clients are often surprised that they hear every word. Unless one enters a deeper state, or at least a medium state, he or she may not "feel" any different than when relaxing in the favourite easy chair with a good book. One may feel quite mellow, and may feel light (or weightless), or very heavy as if sinking into the chair. If one enters a really deep state, the feeling may be euphoric for some, or almost like being intoxicated without the side effects. When you awake you may be surprised that the time seems to have flown by, because just like sleep time can become distorted during hypnosis. This is perfectly normal and simply indicates that you have been in a deep level of relaxation.

What is the unconscious mind?
You have your conscious thoughts which can be described as the self talk or voice inside your head. When you think something through you speak to yourself internally. That is like the tip of the iceberg, and underneath your conscious thought processes your unconscious mind controls everything from your heart rate, breathing (unless you consciously override it), and all your vital bodily functions. Scientists have found that to operate at peak efficiency your conscious and unconscious processes must function towards the same goal. Both your conscious and unconscious thought processes effect the decisions and actions you take in life. Hypnosis is a way of getting your unconscious to cooperate more fully towards the goals of your conscious mind.
